ing tapes when staking out planting blocks and tree rows. Brightly colored
flagging tape makes the rods easy to see.
Markbufferstripsandroads. Fences and roads provide good reference lines
for the edges of your orchard. If roads or fences are not available, stretch
string or baling twine along the property line. Simply mark the width of the
buffer strip, perhaps 30 feet, by placing a flagged stake at a right angle to
your reference line. Place stakes every 50 to 100 feet around the entire peri-
meter of where your trees will be planted. If using a windbreak, be sure to
allow room for it outside the buffer strip.
The buffer strips also serve as roads and headlands, so before going any
further, test to make sure they are wide enough for your equipment. Try
