map p.77. There are various branches of this colourful
Filipino chain restaurant dotted around the city, serving
favourites such as crispy pata (from P490), kare kare (from
P220), pork adobo (P225) and lechon (roast pig; P350) with
hefty portions of rice and daily buffet options. Daily
9am-midnight.
food (heavenly Gruyère fondue from P715), funky alpine
decor and waitresses in milkmaids' costumes - this place
is as Swiss as cheese with a 24hr menu that also includes
the classic gnagi (pork knuckles; P585) and Zurich
geschnetzeltes (shredded pork; P385). Daily 24hr.

dessert) and pancit luglug (P92; fried noodles) chain, with

Rufo's Famous Tapa G/F, A. Venue Mall, Makati Ave

known for its tapa - tender Batangas beef, marinated and
served in a rich, sweet sauce with a side order of fried egg
and garlic rice (P108) for breakfast (served all day here).
Their boneless bangus (milkfish; P126) and tocino (cured
pork; P104) is also excellent. Daily 24hr.

that's packed with o ce workers at lunchtime and the pre-
cinema crowd in the evenings. The menu (most dishes
P220-620) includes modern variations of classics such as
pork adobo , pancit (noodles) and Bicol Express (spicy
stew); the speciality is sinigang na corned beef (sour stew
with corned beef; P595). Daily 11am-11pm.
Carpaccio 7431 Yakal St, San Antonio Village

but never uncomfortably busy, this casual little restaurant
tucked away down a side street behind Makati Fire Station
serves excellent regional Italian food and has a good,
affordable wine list. The speciality is carpaccio - the beef
carpaccio (P480) is delicious - but almost everything is
tasty (pasta and pizza P450-550), including the home-
made ice creams and sorbets. Daily 11am-3pm &
6-11pm.
Ferino's Bibingka Cash & Carry Mall, South Luzon
Expressway at Emilia St T 0916 633 7298, W ferinos
bibingka.com.ph; map p.77. This bibingka franchise
hails back to a family business established in 1938. Look
out for their small carts in malls, worth trying for the
tasty charcoal-cooked rice cakes (P95-115), daubed with
coconut and salted egg. Daily 10am-10pm.
Goto King 8 SM Food Court, Lower Ground Floor, SM
Makati, EDSA W gotoking.com.ph; map p.77. Beloved
congee (rice porridge) chain established in 1984 with
basic congee for P42 and other varieties (egg, chicharon
or fried pig skin) at P50-75. Has expanded in recent
years to serve a wider merienda (snack) menu ( baboy ,
lugaw etc), with branches in just about every SM mall.

Il Ponticello 2/F Antel 2000 Bldg, 121 Valero St T 02
887 7168; map p.77. A bit tricky to find, tucked away in
the backstreets of Makati between rows of of ce blocks,
but worth the effort. It's an Italian restaurant with excellent
pizzas (from P410) - a refreshing change from the fast-
food pizzas that Manila loves so much - and superb risotto
from P390. The best tables are by the window, but you'll
have to book to get one of those. There's also a fashionable
bar inside called Azzuri . Mon-Fri 11am-2.30pm &
5pm-3am, Sat 5.30pm-3am.
New Bombay G/F, Sagittarius Bldg III, 312 H.V. Dela
Costa St; G/F, Tower I, The Columns Condominium,

p.77. Speak to Indian residents in Manila and most will tell
you this functional little restaurant is peerless for authentic
Indian food. The menu is extensive and includes snacks
such as mixed pakora, samosas, curries and freshly
prepared naan, roti and chapati. Cheap, cheerful and very
tasty (most mains range P170-200). Daily 9am-11pm.

Mingle with Manila's upper class in this temple to fine
dining with soaring views of the city. Top chef Jessie
Sincioco crafts modern Filipino cuisine such as crunchy pork
sisig with mayonnaise, Japanese dishes, pasta, steaks and
her famous dessert sou is (the chocolate flavour is hard
to beat), while the trendy bar gets all the attention from
5pm with the best cocktails in the city. Mains average
P300-450 (though rib-eye steaks are over P1000). Mon-

adobe walls and a wandering guitarist who croons at your
table. Dishes include tasty tapas from P180, a large menu
of paellas (from P450), and plenty of fish and stuffed squid

kebab house has froufrou decor and prices to match. If
you're not in the mood for a brain sandwich, you can choose
from dozens of Persian, Arabian and Indian dishes (with a
huge range of curry and kebabs). Mezze plates P150-300.
