MANILA ORTIGAS
Bonifacio Global City (Fort Bonifacio)
Bonifacio Global City (or Fort Bonifacio , after the army camp around which it is located)
sits on the eastern fringes of Makati but is rapidly developing a separate identity of its
own, with skyscrapers, posh condos and shopping malls developed by Ayala Corp.
Other than the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial , there's little in the way of
traditional sights, though the shops, bars and restaurants of Market! Market! (see box,
p.90) show off Manila's ambitious, a uent side.

On the southeastern edge of Makati, 3km away from Glorietta mall, lies the serene
Manila American Cemetery and Memorial , containing 17,201 graves of American
military personnel killed in World War II, most of whom lost their lives in operations
in New Guinea and the Philippines. The headstones are aligned in eleven plots forming
a generally circular pattern, and set among a wide variety of tropical trees and
shrubbery. There is also a chapel and two curved granite walkways whose walls contain
mosaic maps depicting the battles fought in the Pacific, along with the names of the
36,285 American servicemen whose bodies were not recovered (rosettes mark the
names of those since found and identified).
Ortigas
MRT to Shaw Blvd or Ortigas
A dense huddle of malls and of ces, Ortigas lies 5km north of Makati on EDSA. The
district began to come to life in the early 1980s, when a number of corporations left
the bustle of Makati for its relatively open spaces; the Asian Development Bank moved
here in 1991 and the Manila Stock Exchange followed one year later. Today its biggest
draw for Manileños is the SM Megamall ,
one of Asia's largest shopping malls.

MRT to Ortigas (15min walk)
The one genuine cultural attraction in
Ortigas is the Lopez Memorial Museum ,
founded in 1960 by tycoon Eugenio
Lopez to provide scholars and students
with access to his personal collection of
rare topics and since expanded to contain
other treasures. The oldest is a priceless
1524 copy of the account of Magellan's
circumnavigation of the world by one
Maximilianus Transylvanus. The
museum's art collection includes
important paintings by nineteenth-
century Filipino masters Juan Luna and
Félix Hidalgo, as well as selected works
by Fernando Amorsolo, who gained
prominence during the early 1930s and
