Tagbilaran in 20min. Spacious villas are either on the beach
or in a quiet garden, all with large lanai (veranda). A good

ELSEWHERE ON THE ISLAND
The Bellevue Resort Doljo Beach T 038 422 2222,
W thebellevue.com. Panglao's newest big player, The
Bellevue has firmly planted sleepy Doljo Beach on the map.
The hotel features a huge beachfront pool and super comfort-
able rooms, with breathtaking sea views from the balcony,
and is less than 50m from a beautiful stret ch of w hite sand
that's nowhere near as busy as Alona Beach. P5800

EATING AND DRINKING
In Alona itself, there is a good selection of restaurants , both on the beach and along the road into town. Many of the
beachside places set up tables and chairs on the sand which make the perfect spot for a sunset beer, whether or not you
choose to dine there. Nightlife mainly revolves around resort and dive-shop bars ( Coco Vida - at Alona Vida - and Oops ,
next door, are both popular), but there are a few independent places by the beach turn-off.
pizza (try the Balicasag with salmon and tuna, P240) right
on the beach. Daily 7am-midnight.
Helmut's Place On the corner of the main road turn-
off to Alona Beach. Owned by a German biker, this
enduringly popular bar has friendly service, live sports, a
pool table, plus decent European food. Daily 10am-2am.
Jugali's Bistro On the main road to the beach T 0929
410 3189, W jugalis-bohol.com. Owned by a German
chef and named for his sons, Jugali's is a modest-looking
place which serves fantastic food using super-fresh
ingredients. Top choices include lapu-lapu in potato crust
with buttered vegetables (P390) and mango chicken
(P300). In the morning the heavy-duty breakfast (P330)
packs enough Brazilian beef strip, potatoes, onion and egg
to see you through until dinner. There's also free wi-fi for
customers. Daily 7am-11pm.
Le Rendez-Vous On the main road by the turn-off to
the beach T 038 503 8328. One of a new breed of trendy
places to eat in Alona, French-owned Rendez-Vous serves
healthy breakfasts (P40-200), panini, salads, aged cheeses
and has a decent wine list. Daily 7am-10.45pm.
ALONA BEACH
Buzz Café 100m west of Alona Kew Resort T 038 510
1822, W boholbeefarm.com. Owned by Bohol Bee Farm
(see p.294), this is a great addition to Alona's café line-up
and serves excellent mango pancakes with bacon and
eggs, along with regulars from the farm menu. The second-
floor restaurant looks out over the beach and they sell
packaged local delicacies downstairs. Free wi-fi. Daily
8am-9pm.
Charts By the turn-off for Ester Lim St T 038 502 9095,
W charts-alona.com. Lovely daytime café where you can
get a decent cup of coffee while looking at local artwork.

Graziella On the main road to the beach T 0920 561
6169. Previously known as Kamalig , this Italian-owned
restaurant continues to turn out the best pasta on the
island with a delicious carbonara (P235). Beef carpaccio
(P215), caffè carretto (with amaretto) and Italian house
wine are also on the menu. Tues-Sun 6-10pm.

Banks There's a BPI ATM next to Jugali's in Alona, but don't
count on it having cash. There are also plenty of places to
change money in Alona - Jad-ski, a small shop on the
main road, offers competitive rates.
Internet There's internet available at Alona's tourist
centre for P60/hr. Many beach resorts and restaurants also
have wi-fi for customers.
Laundry Laundry can be done at Dada's, next to the
tourist centre in Alona.
The interior
Apart from the famous Chocolate Hills, Bohol's interior hosts a range of sights worth
exploring. Take your pick from historic churches (some of which were damaged by the
2013 quake), markets, waterfalls, tiny tarsiers and a jungle adventure camp.
