DIRECTORY
PUERTO GALERA
Banks and exchange Allied Savings Bank (Mon-Fri
9am-3pm; T 042 442 0203) near the turn-off for Muelle
pier in Poblacion exchanges foreign currencies and has
an ATM, but is not always online, so bring enough pesos,
or dollars, for your time here. The well-stocked Candava
Supermarket at 62 P. Concepcion St also changes dollars.
Otherwise the nearest banks with international Cirrus/
Maestro links are in Calapan or Batangas (there are also
ATMs at Batangas port).
Clinics and pharmacies The Puerto Galera Medical Clinic
is in Axalan St in town, a short walk up the hill from Muelle
pier, opposite the church. There are a number of other
rudimentary clinics in the town; if in doubt you can always
ask the dive operators, who know where the best doctors
are. There are also a few small pharmacies in town.
Immigration The immigration o ce is inside the munici-
pal compound, a short walk from Muelle pier, and can
provide on-the-spot visa extensions (Mon-Wed 9am-
noon only). You can photocopy your passport entry stamp
page in shops nearby.
Internet access Internet access is widely available from
P25/hr. The Hangout Bar (see opposite) has free internet.
Police station The police station ( T 043 281 4043) is
inside the municipal compound.
SABANG
Banks Maxbank (on the road heading back to Poblacion)
has an ATM that usually accepts international cards.
Internet access There are a few small internet cafés
dotted along the main alley through Sabang, and most
hotels and resorts have wi-fi.
Calapan
About 45km along an often unpaved road east of Puerto Galera, the busy port
city of CALAPAN is the capital of Mindoro Oriental. It's not a tourist destination,
depending for most of its livelihood on trade, but it has good transport connections
and is the base for a trek up Mount Halcon , the fourth highest mountain in the
country and supposedly the toughest to climb. Calapan's main street is J.P. Rizal
Street , which is only 500m long and runs past Calapan Cathedral south to
Juan Luna Street.
