top-end hotels, is centred on Peñaranda Park and known as the
Albay district
. A couple
of kilometres to the northeast is the new town, or
City Proper
, a muddle of small
businesses, banks, cinemas and market stalls where the rest of the hotels are located,
along with the waterfront
Embarcadero de Legazpi
, a large mall that also offers
go-karting, arcade games, watersports and live music. It's a 25-minute walk between
Albay and City Proper, along a busy, polluted road lacking a decent pavement - a
tricycle or jeepney is a better option.

Popular with local families,
Ligñon Hill
is not only a great viewpoint for Mayon but also
a destination in its own right. Attractions include a zipline, hanging bridge, Japanese
war tunnels and quad bikes that can be rented at the base of the hill for tours to see
volcanic rock formations. The hill is also the location of the
Philippine Institute of
Volcanology and Seismology
(PHIVOLCS) research station (

phivolcs.dost.gov.ph).
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE

By plane
The airport is 2km northwest of City Proper;
incoming flights are met by tricycles at the airport (5min;
P50). PAL and Cebu Pacific serve Manila (3 daily; 1hr 10min).
By bus
All buses arrive at the Grand Central Terminal on
the western edge of City Proper. Dozens of a/c buses ply the
route to Manila, including Philtranco, and there are plenty
of local buses.
Destinations
Manila (dozens daily; 8-10hr); Naga (every
15min; 2hr); Sorsogon City (every 15min; 1hr 30min);
Tabaco (every 20min; 1hr).
