The cathedral
High Town • Daily 5am-6pm
Construction of Boac's atmospheric Spanish Gothic cathedral started in 1580 in
honour of the Blessed Virgin of Immediate Succour, and was used in its early years
as a refuge from pirate attacks. Most of the original main structure, including the
red-brick facade and the belfry, is well preserved and there's a pleasant garden
outside. Look out above the main doors for a stone niche containing a statue of the
Blessed Virgin, enshrined here in 1792. Devotees say it is the most miraculous
statue in the country and tell of blind people who have regained their sight after
praying fervently beneath it day and night.
