Lourdes Grotto and Dominican Hill
Off Dominican Hill Rd • Taxi from city centre P50, jeepney P8.50
High on a hill in the western part of the city is
Lourdes Grotto
, a Catholic shrine
watched over by an image of Our Lady of Lourdes and reached by 252 steps. One
kilometre further at the summit of the road is
Dominican Hill
, from where the views
across the city are superlative. The crumbling Hotel Diplomat on the peak was built by
a Dominican order, then later owned by a controversial entrepreneur and faith healer;
it's abandoned and rather eerie today, but you can wander around inside.

One of the best art galleries in the Philippines, the
BenCab Museum
is well worth the
short trip out of the centre. Built to house the collection of local artist Ben Cabrera,
who has a home and studio next door, it's an airy modernist structure with lots of
natural light and great views of the surrounding scenery. Two galleries house temporary
exhibitions while the other seven contain permanent displays, including anything from
Ifugao artefacts and old prints of the Philippines to paintings and sculptures by
contemporary Filipino artists. Below the museum is an excellent
café
overlooking a
duck pond and organic farm. The beautiful
garden
features cascading waterfalls and
an eco-trail to a viewpoint on the hillside.

On the northwest outskirts of Baguio, 5km from the centre,
Tam-awan Village
is a
replica tribal village established in 1996 by a group of Filipino artists, including
Ben Cabrera and Jordan Mang-osan. There is a small gallery with changing exhibitions,
a gift shop and café, and a cultural show with dancing every Saturday afternoon - you
can even stay the night here in a tribal hut (see opposite). Tam-awan means “vantage
point” - on a clear evening, you'll see magnificent China Sea sunsets and even the
Hundred Islands in the distance.
