Kayaking and Canoeing
West Maui has numerous options for both kayaking and outrigger canoeing. While kayak-
ing isn't as hard on the shoulder muscles and allows you to hug the coastline a little closer,
outrigger canoeing comes with a culturally rich experience unique to Polynesia. The morn-
ing hours are the best time to paddle, with most operators offering an early morning tour
followed by another one during the mid to late morning.
KAPALUA, NAPILI, AND HONOKOWAI
The most popular kayak trip on the Upper West Side of the island is the paddle from D.T.
Fleming Beach Park to Honolua Bay. Along this stretch of coastline you will pass rugged
rock formations inaccessible from the road, and you'll hug this dramatic coast past Mok-
ulei'a Bay and into Honolua. Because of the high surf during winter, these tours are only
offered during the summer, and all trips depart D.T. Fleming Beach Park in the early morn-
ing hours before the afternoon trade winds pick up. Snorkeling in Honolua Bay is included
in the excursions, and you have a high likelihood of encountering Hawaiian green sea
turtles or potentially even Hawaiian spinner dolphins.
Of the companies offering tours up here, Hawaiian Paddle Sports (808/660-4228,
www.hawaiianpaddlesports.com ) operates completely private excursions for $159 for a
private tour, $129/person for tours of 2-4 people, and $109/person for tours of five or more.
Maui Kayaks (808/874-4000, www.mauikayaks.com ) offers a three-hour trip for $78/per-
son with a 7am check-in at D.T. Fleming Beach Park.
KA'ANAPALI
Off Kahekili Beach Park in front of the Westin Villas, Maui Paddle Sports (808/
283-9344, www.mauipaddlesports.com ) offers two-hour outrigger canoe rides in a six-
man outrigger for $85/person. All canoe tours take place during the morning, but on days
with light winds tours can go as late as 1pm.
