Hawai'i Press, 1974. A highly readable history of Hawai'i dating from its “discovery”
by the Western world down to its acceptance as the 50th state. Good insight into the
psychological makeup of influential characters who helped form Hawai'i's past.
Ellis, William. A Narrative of an 1823 Tour Through Hawai'i. Reprint. Honolulu: Mutual
Publishing, 2004. Reprint of the 1825 journal by an early missionary of a journey around
the island of Hawai'i and impressions of the land and its people. One of the first de-
scriptions of Hawai'i for the West.
Fornander, Abraham. An Account of the Polynesian Race; Its Origins and Migrations, and
the Ancient History of the Hawaiian People to the Times of Kamehameha I. Rutland,
VT: C.E. Tuttle Co., 1969. This is a reprint of a three-volume opus originally published
1878-1885. It is still one of the best sources of information on Hawaiian myth and le-
gend.

Kamakau, S. M. Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, revised edition. Honolulu: Kamehameha
Schools Press, 1992. A history of Hawai'i from the legendary leader 'Umi to the mid-
Kamehameha dynasty, from oral tales and a Hawaiian perspective.
Lili'uokalani. Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen. Reprint, Honolulu: Mutual Publishing,
1990. Originally written in 1898, this moving personal account recounts Hawai'i's in-
evitable move from monarchy to U.S. Territory by its last queen, Lili'uokalani. The
facts can be found in other histories, but none provides the emotion or point of view ex-
pressed by Hawai'i's deposed monarch. This is a must-read to get the whole picture.
