or from any hotel or condo if going to the airport. Executive Airport Shuttle (808/
669-2300 or 800/833-2303) offers virtually the same service to and from the airport and
to points around the island for marginally better rates, which will average around $50 per
person from Kahului to Ka'anapali. Although these companies will service calls as soon
as they can, they prefer several hours' or even 24 hours' notice if possible.
BUS
The Maui Bus (808/270-7511, www.co.maui.hi.us/bus ) system has eight routes for an in-
expensive way to get around to the major towns. Fares are $2 per boarding or $4 for a day
pass, and monthly passes are also available. Although the bus does run to the airport, riders
are not allowed to board with luggage which can't fit under their seat. For a full listing of

BICYCLE
Maui is a great island for both serious road cyclers and those who prefer to just cruise
around town. Towns such as Lahaina and Kihei are easily navigable by bicycle, although
on many occasions cyclists will be forced to share the road with similarly slow-moving
traffic. Rental shops can be found in Kahului, Pa'ia, Kihei, and Lahaina, and all will have
island maps detailing the best rides.
SCOOTERS
Scooters are great for just for running around town. Most rental operators will ask for a
cash or credit card deposit. You must be at least 18 years old, have a valid driver's license,
and often stay within a certain area from your rental office. Legally, mopeds can have only
one rider.
DRIVE WITH ALOHA
Local customs come into play behind the wheel. You'll notice that even on high-
ways drivers cruise along slowly. The maximum speed limit found anywhere on
Maui is 55 mph, and in many places it's between 30 and 45. Off the main roads, it's
essential to go slow in residential neighborhoods or on any side streets, especially
when there are homes around. Going fast, even if it's not really speeding, can result
