Getting There and Around
AIR
More likely than not you'll land at the Kahului Airport (1 Kahului Airport Rd., 808/
872-3830, www.hawaii.gov/ogg ) , which is 30-45 minutes by car from the resort areas of
Wailea and Ka'anapali. Kahului has direct flights to a host of mainland cities and handful
of international destinations, and it's serviced by most major carriers.
Other than Kahului there are two small airstrips in the areas of Kapalua and Hana.
There are no direct flights to the mainland from here, although there are seven flights per
day from the Kapalua Airport to the neighboring island of O'ahu.
CAR
Car Rental
Although more expensive than the bus, rental cars are the easiest way for getting around
and exploring the island. While there are a number of large corporate rental car companies
which operate within the airport, there are also a number of locally-owned companies
which can provide better rates and more “authentic” looking cars. A shiny new rental car
is always nice to drive around in, but the downside is that rentals are usually the targets
of car thieves. Having a car that looks like a local's can potentially save you the cost of a
break-in.
