In-Depth Information
Although the islands of Maui, Lana'i, Moloka'i, and Kaho'olawe are four separate
landmasses today, there was a time when all were connected in an island known as “Maui
Nui,” or “great Maui.” This massive island was larger than the modern-day Big Island, and
it's estimated that the islands were joined until as recently as 20,000 years ago when sea
levels were lower as a result of an ice age.
