four people comfortably, and rates run $175 a night, with a three-night minimum and $75
cleaning fee. No credit cards.
Some distance farther is the Molokai Beach House (808/599-3838,
www.molokaibeachhouse.com ), a three-bedroom, two-bath, oceanfront home with all the
conveniences. A large yard with a picnic table spreads out before you on the ocean side,
and inside this island-style house is a big living room, full kitchen, and laundry room. The
house sleeps up to six and runs $250 per night or $1,600 per week, with a $125 cleaning
fee and three-night minimum.
At the far eastern end of the island high on the eastern hillside sits 14,000-acre M Pu'u
O Hoku Ranch (808/558-8109, www.puuohoku.com ). The three cottages and one lodge
are some of the best and most remote on the island. If you're looking for a place to get
away from everything, this is it. This is a real, working ranch, and it's also minutes away
from the shores of Halawa Bay. This is a great place to tap into Hawai'i's history and
culture, but those who prefer large beach resorts should probably just stay away. Wi-Fi is
available at a few spots, but most accommodations are “unplugged.” Check in at the ranch
office along the highway at mile marker 25, where there is a small sundries store that sells
basic food and gift items.
The two-bedroom Sunrise Cottage is $225/night, has a full kitchen, covered lanai, and
can accommodate up to four people. The larger, four-bedroom Grove Cottage is $300/night
for four people and $30/night for each additional guest, and can comfortably accommod-
ate up to eight people. From this cottage there are ocean views looking out toward Maui
with amazing whale-watching in winter. Five miles closer to Kaunakakai along the main
highway, the one-bedroom Sugar Mill cottage is $200/night, sleeps four people, has a full
kitchen, and is walking distance from one of the island's nicest beaches. For groups of 14
or more, the all-inclusive lodge includes three meals a day and spacious accommodations
for $165/person/night. All cottages have a minimum two-night stay and a $100 cleaning
fee; the lodge has a four-night minimum.
Camping
Camping without permission in Halawa Valley is a great way to get a tongue-lashing from
protective valley locals. Recently, however, Pu'u O Hoku Ranch has installed temporary
restroom facilities in the valley, and has begun issuing free permits to camp along the
shoreline May-September. Inquire at the ranch office before you set up camp.
