In-Depth Information
Be sure to book ahead for Hana Kai Maui Resort.
The Hana Bay Hale (808/248-4999, www.hanabayhale.com , $145-245) looks out over
Hana Bay and features three separate suites. The Kauiki and Waikoloa one-bedroom units
are $145/night plus a $25 cleaning fee for one-night stays, and the two-bedroom Hana Bay
suite is $245/night plus a $35 cleaning fee for one-night stays. One-bedroom units have
kitchenettes whereas the two-bedroom suite has a full kitchen, and the units can all be
combined into a single large house for anyone traveling in a large group.
On the southern end of town between Hana and Kipahulu are the Guest Houses at
Malanai (808/248-8706, www.hanaguesthouses.com , $245-295). This lush property fea-
tures the one-bedroom Hale Ulu Ulu guesthouse and the larger, two-bedroom Hale Manu,
both of which rent for the same rate depending upon length of stay. These two separate
houses are located a 15-minute stroll from Hamoa Beach and Waioka Pool, and the owners
can provide basic accessories you might need for the beach as well as insight on the area.
Condominiums
The Hana Kai Maui Resort (1533 Uakea Rd., 808/248-8426, www.hanakaimaui.com ,
$200-300) is the only condo rental in town. All units are well maintained and offer a lot for
the money. Because there are only 18 rental units, you know this is an intimate place. The
condo is set right on the water looking out over Hana Bay, each unit has a private lanai,
and you fall asleep every night to the gentle lap of the waves. Rates vary depending on size
and location of the unit but often run between $200-300.
KIPAHULU
Over $150
One of the best parts of staying in Kipahulu is the relaxing nature of the remote community
and the ability to wake up in the morning and have the Pools of 'Ohe'o walking distance
away. One of the most peaceful accommodations in this area is the Ala'aina Ocean Vista
(808/248-7824, www.hanabedandbreakfast.com , $198-218), a tropical bed-and-breakfast
on four lush acres that is the exact opposite of the Ka'anapali resort experience. Here you
are bathed in a forest of mango trees that gaze over the blue Kipahulu coastline. Birds chirp
in the nearby treetops, there is a barbecue area for those who want to cook their own din-
ner, and a large assortment of various fruit trees sustain the daily breakfast. The bamboo
forest of the Pipiwai Trail is only a short walk away, and this is a romantic getaway set out
in the country for those who just want to unwind. Rates vary depending on length of stay,
but there is no cleaning fee.
