In-Depth Information
Also in the center of town is the Nalu Kai Lodge (18 Nalu Pl., 808/385-4344,
www.nalukailodge.com , $125-175) offering simple and comfortable accommodations just
steps from Pa'ia Bay. There is a second-story deck with ocean views, as well as outdoor
showers and a tiki bar. While you can't beat the location and the price, the area can some-
times be prone to road noise.
For an all-time classic North Shore accommodation right on Kuau Cove, The Inn
at Mama's Fish House (799 Poho Pl., 808/579-9764, www.mamasfishhouse.com ,
$175-575) provides the warmth of Polynesia that the famous restaurant is known for, and
this is one the island's best boutique hotels. The suites, studios, and cottages feature amen-
ities such as full kitchens, maid service, and 15 percent off at the restaurant. The real perk,
however, is the location; there is nothing like watching the sunset from beneath a rustling
palm as you get the benefit of staying in this secluded cove that most visitors can only en-
joy for the length of a meal.
Bed-and-Breakfasts
Between Pa'ia and Ho'okipa Beach Park, the Kuau Inn (676 Hana Hwy., 808/579-6046,
www.kuauinn.com , $125-145) is a four-room house that offers clean B&B accommoda-
tions just minutes from the shoreline. Breakfast and Wi-Fi are both included. There is a full
kitchen, covered lanai, and communal living room area. There is a minimum three-night
stay.
HA'IKU
Bed-and-Breakfasts
While there are a number of small B&Bs in Ha'iku, one of the best is the Haiku Plant-
ation Inn (555 Haiku Rd., 808/575-7500, www.haikuplantation.com , $129-159), about a
half-mile below the center of town. Under its canopy of tall and stately trees, this dignified
rural bed-and-breakfast was established in the 1870s and became the island's first official
B&B in 1986. The inn has four comfy bedrooms, each with its own shower, and breakfast
and Internet are included— three-night minimum. This is the perfect place for stepping
back to a time that was simpler and slower.
ROAD TO HANA
Down at the end of a road near Twin Falls is the Tea House Cottage (808/572-5610,
www.mauiteahouse.com , $150 d, $130 s). This B&B is “off the grid,” generating its own
power by photovoltaic cells and collecting its own water. It's quiet, with no distractions,
