your own bathroom and more privacy, the two-bedroom cottage also provides access to
the property Jacuzzi.
In the forest above Makawao town, you will find M Aloha Cottage (808/573-8555,
www.alohacottage.com , $199-299) down a quiet country lane off rural Olinda Road. As
quiet as quiet can be, its only neighbors are the horses in the pastures beyond the distant
fence. This intimate venue sits on a five-acre estate and offers panoramic views from the
deck of the octagonal structure. Slink into the two-person hot tub on the cool Olinda nights,
and wake each morning to the chirp of the birds as they sing from the surrounding forest.
Rates vary depending on length of stay, and there is $100 cleaning fee added to the total
cost.
KULA
$100-150
The M Kula Lodge (15200 Haleakala Hwy., 808/878-1535, www.kulalodge.com ,
$125-195) is Upcountry's most popular accommodation option. On Route 377 at a
3,200-foot elevation, the air is crisp and cool up here and much more comfortable than
down on the coastline. There are five detached chalets that all feature private lanais, and
two of which have wood-burning fireplaces. The rustic yet comfortable setting makes the
perfect base for visiting Haleakala Crater.
Just up the road, the Kula Sandalwoods (15427 Haleakala Hwy., 808/878-3523,
www.kulasandalwoods.com , $149-159) is another Kula classic that is far more laid-back
than its popular neighbor. These stand-alone cottages sit up on a hillside and offer sweep-
ing views of the island's central valley. While there is complimentary Wi-Fi as well as
morning coffee, the cottages are otherwise free of appliances. This is a place to just kick
back and relax. The summit of Haleakala is only a 45-minute drive from this 3,300-foot
location.
Bed-and-Breakfasts
In Lower Kula on the drive out toward Keokea, Upcountry Bed and Breakfast (4925
Lower Kula Rd., 808/878-8083, www.upcountrybandb.com , $150) has rooms in a relaxing
Upcountry setting. The owner is a wealth of information on everything island-related, and
locally grown Upcountry fruit is served with each morning's breakfast. There is also free
Wi-Fi, fireplaces in winter, and sweeping sunset views.
Above Highway 377 is Puluke Farms B&B (26 Wahelani Rd., 808/878-3263, pu-
luke@maui.net , $95). Attached to the main house, this one-room hideaway has great views
