Camping
The best, legal, camping on the West Side of the island is at Camp Olowalu (800 Olowalu
Village Rd., 808/661-4303, www.campolowalu.com , $15/person, $5/child), about 10
minutes south of Lahaina. The facilities have been majorly spruced up in the last year, and
tent camping is available. Showers, drinking water, toilets, and picnic tables are on the
property, as are water sports rentals for exploring the famous Olowalu reef which is right
outside your front door.
Central Maui
If the vision you've always had of your Maui vacation was a luxurious resort on a world-
famous beach, you'll be disappointed if you stay in Central Maui. Most of the options here
are of the budget variety, and while the Old Wailuku Inn has some privacy and charm, all
other options are utilitarian, cheap, and frequented by travelers who simply need a shower
and four walls. If your main reason for being in Maui is to explore the island, you'll be
happy to stay in Central Maui so you can save your dollars for activities and adventure.
WAILUKU
Hostels
The most affordable places to stay in Wailuku are the two hostels in the funkier, older part
of town. While they are by no means a beach resort, they are practical, centrally located,
and provide an affordable base for exploring the island. All hostel guests must display a
valid passport and ticket off the island as a prerequisite for booking a bed.
If you're on a budget, the M Banana Bungalow (310 N. Market St., 808/244-5090,
www.mauihostel.com , $32-98) offers free adventures around the island. While it's expec-
ted that you tip the guides, tours to Hana, Haleakala, 'Iao Valley, Pa'ia, or Little Beach
just for the cost of a tip is a nice perk. The rooms are clean and basic (there are private as
well as shared dorm rooms) and the garden surroundings are relaxing, but the hostel is in
an unattractive part of the island and can often be a party scene (although “quiet hours” go
into effect at 10pm). Rates range from $32/night for a dorm bed to $75/night for a private
single, $84 for a double, and $98 for a triple. Linens are included, towels aren't, and surfers
are always welcome.
