Bed-and-Breakfasts
Couples looking for a romantic retreat will love the M Plantation Inn (174 Lahainaluna
Rd., 808/667-9225, www.theplantationinn.com , $158-265), a hidden little pocket of calm
in otherwise frantic Lahaina. On Lahainaluna Road just a one-minute walk from Front
Street, this 19-room getaway has a swimming pool, free parking, free Wi-Fi, and daily
maid service, and manages to retain its 19th-centuy charm. Breakfast is served daily
until 9:30am and features French-inspired cuisine from chef Gerard Reversade, whose ac-
claimed restaurant on the same property gives hotel guests a discount.
For a bed-and-breakfast outside of downtown, try the Garden Gate Bed and Break-
fast (67 Kaniau Rd., 808/661-8800, www.gardengatebb.com , $119-169) set between La-
haina and Ka'anapali in a quiet, residential area. All of the rooms are comfortable and well
worth the price considering the cost of lodging in Lahaina. Breakfast is often served on the
lanai, although not on Sunday.
Condominiums
Right on the water by 505 Front Street, the Lahaina Shores Beach Resort (475 Front St.,
808/661-4835 or 800/642-6284, www.lahainashores.com , $225-300) is a six-story condo
with individually owned units which has just undergone a major renovation. This is a con-
venient base for those who want to take a surf lesson, stroll down the beach, access La-
haina Harbor, or be walking distance from town. Rates vary considerably, but most studios
and once bedrooms will be $300 and under.
Smack in the center of town a block off Front Street is the 188-room 'Aina Nalu
Resort (660 Waine'e St., 800/367-5226, fax 808/661-3733,
www.outriggercondominiums.com , $285-400), a modern condo complex in a garden at-
mosphere that has the benefit of being right in town. Rooms are spacious and recently ren-
ovated, and a swimming pool provides a respite from the heat.
While the above two options are perfectly acceptable, the best condo complex in La-
haina is M Puamana, a 28-acre private community on the southern edge of town. There
is a sandy beach in front of the complex good for swimming, and a luxurious pool sits out
on a point surrounded by the ocean. There are tennis courts and a beautiful old clubhouse.
It's just a 10-minute stroll into downtown Lahaina. Oceanfront rentals are much nicer than
those along the highway, and reservations are available through various West Side rental
agents such as www.puamanavacations.com .
