In-Depth Information
Lunch items such as chicken sandwiches, plate lunches, or any other of your moderately
unhealthy but oh-so tasty local food options are also available.
American
After the kitchen fire that broke out at the Hula Shores Restaurant at Hotel Moloka'i, M
Paddler's Inn (10 Mohala St., 808/553-3300, 11:30am-9pm daily, $10-18) for the fore-
seeable future is about the only place you can go for dinner and also shoulder up to the
bar. Strip steaks, rib plates, and salmon or mahimahi filets round out the entrée menu, and
the Mexican Mondays are as close as you're going to get to Mexican food anywhere on
Moloka'i. This place has nightly music on the patio, pool tables inside, and good vibes all
around.
Even sleepy Kaunakakai has to have its token burger joint, and the patties at Moloka'i
Burger (20 Kamehameha V Hwy., 808/553-3533, 7am-9pm daily, $5) don't disappoint.
Little more than a drive-through shed right next door to Moloka'i Pizza Café, this place
has budget burgers big enough to properly fill you up. For a local treat, skip the bun and
instead spring for a loco moco, a hamburger patty served with two eggs, white rice, and
gravy.
And just as every town has to have its token burger joint, every town has to have a
second burger joint so people can banter about which is better. Only two blocks away
from Moloka'i Burger, Maka's Korner (35 Mohala St., 808/553-8058, 7am-9pm Mon.-
Fri., 9am-1pm Sat., $5-8) is a hole-in-the-wall takeout counter serving up burgers which
melt in your mouth. Try the mushroom burger. It's mo' bettah. Though the $5 burgers are a
great choice, the saimin noodle bowls are a hearty alternative perfect on a cool Kaunakakai
night.
Kamoi Snack-n-Go (28 Kamoi St., 808/553-3742, 11am-9pm Mon-Fri., 9am-9pm
Sat., noon-9pm Sun.) has made a name for itself with the best ice cream you're going to
find anywhere in town: Heaping double scoops of flavors such as coconut and macadamia
nut. There's also free Wi-Fi.
Natural Foods
If you're in need of a little health in your diet after all of the plate lunches and spam
musubis, Outpost Natural Foods (70 Makaena Pl., 808/553-3377, 9am-6pm Sun.-Fri.)
offers a basic selection of fresh produce, energy bars, bulk grains, healthy lunch options,
or a cold drink. This is also a great place to pick up some all-natural ginger candies for
what is usually a stomach-churning ferry ride back to Maui.
