land. You're more than welcome to hike into the preserve; it's just that the road is so bad
you not only need to have four-wheel drive, but you also need to be well-versed in using
it. If you even attempt to drive this road in a 2WD vehicle, not only will you immediately
get stuck, but your day will be ruined. It's 2.6 miles to the trailhead for the Pepe'opae Bog
Trail, and despite the tough access, the best hiking and biking on the island is found high
up in the hills.
Purdy's Na Hua O Ka 'Aina Farm (Macadamia Nut Farm)
One of the most popular visitor stops on the island is Purdy's Na Hua O Ka 'Aina
Farm (808/567-6601, www.molokai.com/eatnuts , 9:30am-3:30pm Tues.-Fri., 10am-2pm
Sat., free) behind the public high school on Lihi Pali Avenue near the homesteads of
Ho'olehua. This is the only macadamia nut farm on the island. If there was ever anything
you wanted to know about a macadamia nut, then you're going to learn it here. An in-
formal tour led by the jovial owner will teach you not only how to crack open the hard
nut, but also how the nuts are grown and how to pick out the good ones. Plus, there are
no pesticides, herbicides, or any other chemicals coursing through this grove of 50 trees.
Everything is all natural. Once the nuts drop down to the ground, it means it's time for
roasting. While samples are included with the free tour, a small gift shop sells everything
from macadamia nut honey to mac nut-themed clothing.
