Not only is owner and captain Mike Holmes of Fun Hogs Fishing (808/567-6789
or 808/336-0047, www.molokaifishing.com ) an accomplished waterman and avid canoe
racer, but he also runs one of the best operations for deep-sea fishing available for visitors.
Aboard the 27-foot AHI Holmes can take guests trolling for blue water game fish such as
mahimahi, ono, ahi, and marlin. Four-hour charters run $450, while a full-day, eight-hour
charter can be booked for $600. Fun Hogs can also arrange seasonal whale-watching trips
for $70/adult, private snorkeling charters, or any other sort of outing provided there are six
passengers or fewer.
Based out of Kaunakakai, Captain Joe Reich of Alyce C. Sportfishing (808/558-8377,
www.alycecsportfishing.com ) similarly offers half-day, three-quarter-day, and full-day
charters aboard his 31-foot cruiser. A knowledgeable fisher who will go wherever the fish
are biting, Captain Joe's goal is to send you home with as much fresh fish as you can pos-
sibly make use of.
GOLF
Now that the fairways of the Kaluakoi Golf Course have reverted back to dirt, the lone
remaining course on the island is the 9-hole Ironwood Hills Golf Club (Kalae Hwy., 808/
567-6000, www.molokaigolfcourse.com , $36) in the cool eucalyptus groves of Kala'e off
Highway 470. Set at a 1,200-foot elevation and not far from Pala'au State Park, this course
is easy on the pocketbook and the only option for breaking out the clubs while in town.
Clubs and carts are available for rent.
Sights
People who claim that there isn't a lot to do on Moloka'i have most likely never even
scoured the island to see what's out there. Although Moloka'i is a place you go to decom-
press, there are still a healthy number of visitor sites relating to the island's history, culture,
and agricultural heritage.

Kapuaiwa Coconut Grove
Situated right on the side of Highway 450, Kapuaiwa Coconut Grove is impossible to
pass without noticing the cluster of palms. Planted in 1860 for Kamehameha V, this grove
once sported 1,000 palms, although the number remaining has diminished. Despite the
