low the pavement to the end. From here you'll notice a rudimentary sign pointing the way
toward the beach. When the dirt road ends in a parking lot, it's only a short walk to the
shore. While the beach you come to first is nice enough, it's nothing compared to Kawakiu.
Keep heading north along the shoreline and scramble over some rocks until you cross a
stretch of sand known as Make Horse Beach (Dead Horse Beach). You'll notice a dirt
road running along the top of the bluff which will lead you all the way to Kawakiu. Or,
if the tide is low and the surf calm, meander your way along the shoreline. The protected
cove is idyllic in summer, tumultuous in winter, and almost always empty. If you prefer
to bathe in the buff, then this is the place. Bring lots of water, as well as proper footwear
capable of withstanding sharp lava rocks and kiawe thorns.
