In-Depth Information
MEDICAL SERVICES
Given its small population, Lana'i doesn't have the same medical services available as
neighboring Maui or O'ahu. Anything requiring immediate or life-threatening attention
will require a brief—yet expensive—helicopter ride to a neighboring island, so it's best to
stay safe and in good health while enjoying your time on Lana'i. For minor emergencies
or general care, the Lana'i Community Hospital (628 7th St., 808/565-8450,
www.lch.hhsc.org ) can provide services such as x-rays or lab work. During daytime hours
there is also the Straub Lana'i Family Health Clinic (628-B 7th St., 808/565-6423,
8am-4:30pm Mon.-Fri.) which provides a decent range of medical services.
NEWSPAPERS
To put your finger on the pulse of the local Lana'i happenings, pick up a copy of The
Lana'i Times for information on upcoming events.
BANKS
Lana'i City has the two banks on the island: First Hawaiian Bank (644 Lanai Ave., 808/
565-6969) and Bank of Hawaii (460 8th St., 808/565-6426). Both are open 8:30am-4pm
Monday-Thursday and 8:30am-6pm Friday, but they may be closed for lunch. Both have
ATMs outside their offices for after-hours banking.
GROCERIES
While the supermarkets on Lana'i are much like the supermarkets in any other part of the
state, there is one notable quirk which reminds you that you're still on a very small island.
Of the three markets in town, two close Wednesday noon-1:30pm for “Barge Day,” which
is when they restock the shelves with all the new foodstuffs which arrived on the barge
from Honolulu that morning.
The markets are right next to each other and for pretty much the same. Richard's Su-
permarket (434 8th St., 808/565-3780, 8am-7pm Mon.-Sat., 10am-5pm Sun.) is officially
the largest store on the island and the supermarket choice of most island visitors. In addi-
tion to basic groceries it also serves as a hardware store, souvenir stop, and general sundry
store. Right inside the door there is an informative community bulletin board (lost dog,
weedeater for sale, yoga classes available). And this is a good place for picking up some
local clothing items that don't look like souvenirs. Basic camping supplies, beer, wine, and
ice are also available.
