Lana'i officially takes the cake for being the only Hawaiian Island where you could poten-
tially visit every store on the island without having to repark the car. With the exception of
the small stores within the Four Seasons resorts, every single venue on the island is within
walking distance of the parking area around Dole Park.
CLOTHING AND SOUVENIRS
The nicest gas station on the island (also the only gas station), the Lana'i Plantation Store
(1036 Lana'i Ave., 808/565-7227, 6:30am-10pm daily) offers a great selection of island
souvenirs and clothing items to go along with the usual snacks and beverage options. Plus,
it's open later than nearly every other store on the island, so if you're in need of anything
from a T-shirt to a six-pack, this is going to be the place to go.
Just down the street, the aptly named Dis N' Dat Shop (418 8th St., 808/565-9170,
10am-5:30pm Mon.-Sat.) sells everything from hand-painted ceramic ornaments to wo-
men's jewelry to the wind chimes which dangle from the ceiling (duck!). The Balinese
woodwork gives an exotic feel to the interior. To find the store, just look for the old yellow
car on the lawn.
Tucked away just one block back from Dole Park is Lana'i Beach Walk (850 Fraser
Ave., 808/565-9249, 10am-6pm Mon.-Sat.), a clean and modern boutique selling women's
clothing. There are a number of Lana'i-centric clothing options, and the selection is so
trendy you'd expect to find the store in Pa'ia instead of Lana'i City.
Facing the park, The Local Gentry (363 7th St., 808/565-9130, 10am-6pm Mon.-Fri.,
10am-5pm Sat., 9am-1pm Sun.) offers a larger men's selection as well as a full range of
women's clothing and Olu Kai shoes.
ART AND JEWELRY
The most prominent gallery on the island is the Mike Carroll Gallery (443 7th St.,
808/565-7122, www.mikecarrollgallery.com , 10am-5:30pm Mon.-Sat., 9am-2pm Sun.) set
right between Canoe's restaurant and the Lana'i City theater. There's a good chance that
you'll find Mike painting right there in the store, and many of his pieces focus on the
simple yet captivating beauty of Lana'i. He is an in-demand artist who is constantly craft-
ing original works. The gallery will occasionally feature visiting artists who come to relax
and hone their craft in this charming, plantation-style studio.
