In-Depth Information
HORSEBACK RIDING
Lana'i is as steeped in its ranching heritage as anywhere else in Hawai'i. Many forget
that this island was one huge sheep and cattle ranch where paniolos on horseback roamed
the terrain. Though cattle no longer roam free on the island's barren slopes, the island's
ranching heritage lives on at the Stables at Koele (1 Keomuku Hwy., 808/563-9385,
www.lanaigrandadventures.com ) where local guides who are the “real deal” offer guided
trail rides through the Lana'i City hinterlands. Keep an eye out for axis deer or mouflon
sheep as you ride at your own pace on excursions geared to your skill level. The know-
ledgeable guides fortify the excursion with tales of the island's history and inside local
info.
ADVENTURE SPORTS
UTV Rides
There are no guided ATV tours on Lana'i, but don't get bummed out. Lana'i actually offers
something far more comfortable, practical, and better-suited to the terrain: UTV tours.
Whereas ATVs have handlebars like a motorcycle, UTVs feature a steering-wheel simil-
ar to a Jeep, although unlike a Jeep, it's virtually impossible to get a UTV stuck in the
mud. They are the perfect way to see rugged areas such as Munro Trail. Hawaii Western
Adventures (1 Keomuku Hwy., 808/563-9385, www.lanaigrandadventures.com ) operates
guided UTV tours from its scenic Koele headquarters where you can either navigate your
own vehicle or enjoy a leisurely, guide-driven expedition in vehicles which can hold up
to six people. Choose from either a 1-hour scenic ride through the uplands ($75), or a
1.5-hour ($100) or 3-hour ($200) foray onto the Munro Trail.
