rental). The rates that you'll find here are some of the best on the island. If you're flying
into Hana Airport, you'll need to arrange for a pickup at the airport (although wherever
you are staying will almost assuredly have it arranged for you).
TAXI
All taxis across the island will gladly take you on a tour of Hana (it's like hitting the lottery
for them). This, of course, is not by any means the economical way to experience Hana,
but some people can't be bothered with driving or with joining a group tour. If you're just
looking for a taxi to get you from A to B on the island's North Shore, Paia Taxi (808/
298-6390, www.paiataxi.com ) is one of the few operators based here and will offer the
quickest response time for where you need to go. They can also arrange tours to Hana or
anywhere else in Upcountry.
UNDERSTANDING “THE BACK ROAD”
The “back road” from Hana is a journey into another world-and it's more accessible than
you would think.
The back road from Hana is truly unlike any other stretch of road on the island. It
feels as if you've journeyed to the edge of the earth. Panoramic views stretch out to
the blue horizon and the back of Haleakala opens up before you in a rugged swath
of mountainside plunging from summit to sea. Waterfalls tumble directly into the
ocean and the noises of the modern world are given over to the sound of the wind.
