In-Depth Information
Vegetarian
Spunky Café Attitude (6:30pm-10pm Sun.) only operates on Sunday nights and is closer
to a community potluck than an actual restaurant. Organic farmers gather on Sunday even-
ings and take turns preparing a weekly meal, which is open to all who care to attend.
Guests are suggested to trade a donation ($15) for a large plate of freshly prepared veget-
arian cuisine. There are usually exotic teas, homemade kombucha, and all-natural pops-
icles available by small donation as well. More important than the food is the open-mic
jam session which takes place on the small stage. Sit around the communal fire pit and
listen to local artists perform everything from acoustic guitar and harmonica to lyrical
spoken word. A strong sense of aloha permeates the rural setting: As the banner hanging
from the dining area says, “Be grateful, or get out.” To find Café Attitude, travel past the
Laulima Farm stand in the direction of Kaupo and keep an eye out on the makai (ocean
side) of the road for a driveway with two pillars of a sun and a moon. Follow the steep
driveway down into a grassy parking area and listen for the sound of laughter and bongos.
Market
Six miles past Kipahulu at mile marker 34.6 is the historic Kaupo Store (808/248-8054,
10am-5pm Mon.-Sat.), a welcome stop for those in need of a cold drink, a bag of chips, or
an ice-cream bar pulled out of the old-fashioned freezer. You have to go another 20 miles
to find a real restaurant.
