In-Depth Information
the vegetables and fresh produce are grown in a greenhouse on the property. There is also
an ample selection of filling lunch options such as ham apple brie paninis, Italian sausage
pasta, and lemon caper mahimahi. Wash it all down with a fruit smoothie or freshly brewed
coffee.
Italian
Right next door to the Hana Farms fruit stand, M The Clay Oven (4pm-8pm Fri.-Sat,
$14-17) is the best thing to happen to the Hana dinner scene in a long time. Don't be fooled
by the appearance of this outdoor pizza kitchen in the jungle or the “pizza box” of fresh
banana leaves. You'll be surprised to find a full menu of seven different pizza options ran-
ging from classic margherita to creative potato and pesto. The pizzas are filling enough
for two. Large groups can enjoy sitting in “the fireside lounge,” a tent behind the open-air
kitchen. It's at mile marker 31.2 (a few miles past Wai'anapanapa if heading back toward
Kahului).
Thai
M Thai Food by Pranee (5050 Uakea Rd., 10:30am-4pm Mon.-Fri., 10:30am-6pm Sat.-
Sun., $10-12) has diversified the town's culinary scene for the better. Located on Uakea
Road, smack in the center of town between Hana Ballpark and Hana Bay, this open-air
restaurant gets packed for lunch. The filling portions of pad thai and green curry are worth
the wait. The cooks aren't messing around: The curry is served with sweat-inducing spice.
Ask them to pour a ladle of coconut milk over the fiery dish. Parking can be tough; If you
park along Uakea Road, be sure to face the correct direction to avoid a ticket.
Food Carts
Hana's food trucks park in a semi-permanent location, catering to visitors passing through
for the day. All are worth a stop. The main distinctions between them are slight variations
in the menu and how long you expect to wait.
As you first drive into town on the “upper road,” longtime classic Uncle Bill's (808/
264-1731, 6am-1pm Mon.-Fri., $5-12) runs in the driveway of a residential home. Hana's
most laid-back breakfast spot serves heaping veggie omelets, stacks of pancakes, and re-
fillable cups of coffee. You may end up “talking story” with whoever runs the window. To
find Uncle Bill's, go to the two churches in the center of town and drive half a mile back
toward Kahului; you'll see the sign on the ocean side of the roadway.
On the right side of the highway past the gas station is Da Chow Wagon (10am-4pm
Mon., Wed.-Fri., $9-10), serving local classics like roast pork, loco moco, and hamburger
