In-Depth Information
tacos are all local favorites. Get a seat at the outdoor patio, which has some of the best
people-watching in Pa'ia.
Get the easiest and most affordable meal in town at family-run Tortillas Burrito Com-
pany (149 Hana Hwy., 808/579-8269, 7:30am-8pm daily, $5-8). Burritos are served with
locally sourced meat, organic black beans, Spanish rice, fresh vegetables, and a squeeze
of lime. The tacos are even more affordable, although the size pales in comparison to the
bulging burritos. It's in a small strip mall on the Hana side of the stoplight, on the makai
(ocean side) of the highway.
Italian
As the name of M Flatbread Pizza Co. (89 Hana Hwy., 808/579-8989,
www.flatbreadcompany.com , 11am-10pm daily, $16-22) implies, you won't find any
Chicago-style deep dish here. All of the pizzas use organic, locally sourced ingredients
and are fired in an open kiawe (mesquite) wood oven. Try the Mopsy (free-range kalua
pork, organic mango barbecue sauce, organic red onions, Maui pineapple, and goat cheese
from Surfing Goat Dairy), or Coevolution (kalamata olives, organic and local rosemary,
red onions, goat cheese from Surfing Goat Dairy, sweet red peppers, and organic herbs),
both made with organic dough. A lively bar scene fills up nightly; get there early or expect
a wait. Tuesday nights, the restaurant hosts benefits for the local community.
American
Charley's (142 Hana Hwy., 808/579-8085, www.charleysmaui.com , 7am-10pm daily,
$8-14) is as integral a part of town as a dawn patrol at Ho'okipa or a bodysurfing session at
Baldwin Beach. Known as “Willie's Place” because Willie Nelson frequently dines here,
Charley's breeds a colorful cast of characters. You may find yourself dining next to a fam-
ous celebrity on an incognito North Shore vacation. The run-down exterior of the wooden
saloon exudes a gritty, no-nonsense vibe. On the inside, it's a jovial, comfortable sports
bar and bistro that offers healthy menu options with locally sourced ingredients. Top off an
early morning surf session with macadamia nut pancakes. Classic burgers such as a “bacon
and blue” are filling and won't break your budget.
At colorfully decorated Café Mambo (30 Baldwin Ave., 808/579-8021,
www.cafemambomaui.com , 8am-9pm daily, $10-21), options range from organic tofu to
a Mambo Bacon burger served with a slice of Spanish omelet. All beef is from grass-fed
Maui Cattle Company cows. There's also a full range of sandwiches, fajitas, tapas, and
breakfast options. Expect a comfortable, open-air atmosphere where locals come to linger.
