In-Depth Information
Skyview Soaring (Hana Airport, 808/244-7070, www.skyviewsoaring.com , $165 and
up) is a self-powered glider where your pilot, Hans, will take you as high as 10,000 feet be-
fore killing the engines and gliding all the way back to your starting point at the airport. As
you can imagine, this isn't for the faint of heart, although the views afforded of Haleakala
Crater and the eastern flank of mountainside far surpass any you could ever get from driv-
ing along the highway. Bring your camera as you glide silently past towering waterfalls
and above the shoreline of Wai'anapanapa State Park. Flights last for either 30 minutes or
an hour, and if you decide to go for the full hour, you'll be able to soar all the way to the
rim of Haleakala Crater and reach speeds of 50-100 mph on the ride down.
Despite some similarities, Hang Gliding Maui (808/572-6557,
www.hangglidingmaui.com ) offers a different experience. The flight is an instructional
lesson which can go toward earning a certification in sport flying. You won't travel nearly
as high as you would with soaring, although this ultra-light “trike” places you in an ex-
posed outdoor seating arrangement open to the winds. Consequently, you feel as if you're
one step closer to flying. The time in the air is a one-on-one instructional period with your
pilot, Armin, so this isn't an experience you can share as a couple. In all his years of pi-
loting hang gliders on Maui, Armin boasts a 100 percent safety record, and the aircraft is
equipped with backup parachutes for added safety. You can also purchase still photos or
video of your experience from a camera fixed to the wing. Rates for the hang gliding ex-
perience range from $170 for a 30-minute lesson to $280 for a full hour.
