In-Depth Information
should you decide to venture to Red Sand Beach and end up hurting yourself, accept re-
sponsibility for your actions. A lawsuit would result in Red Sand Beach being closed to all
visitors—resident or tourist. Visitor access to Red Sand Beach is already tenuous at best,
so please, act responsibly and respect No Trespassing signs.
Should you feel you meet the criteria to visit Red Sand Beach, you're in for one of the
coastline's most epic spots. This cavernous cove hidden in the mountainside offers decent
swimming and a sandy beach the color of a cinder cone. To find the trail for Red Sand
Beach, get to the legal parking area on Uakea Road by the ballpark (don't park facing the
wrong direction) and walk toward an open grass field next to the community center. Walk
across the grass field, keeping an eye on the bushes on your right for a couple of narrow
trails. Wading for a minute through waist-high grass, you'll eventually emerge at a small
dirt trail that scrambles down the roots of a tree. The footing on this trail can be slippery,
so bare feet or closed-toe shoes are better than rubber slippers. The thin trail continues to
the left up and over a bluff, where landslides can leave a lot of scree on the trail. Once at
the top of the bluff, you'll be greeted with your first photo-op of the stunning cove. From
here it's a short, one-minute walk until you emerge on the red shoreline.
