Tavares Bay (aka Blue Tile Roof)
Black Sand Beach at Wai'anapanapa State Park
Barely visible from Hana Highway, the access for the sandy cove at Tavares Bay can be
found by turning at the house with the blue tile roof. Located 0.6 miles past the stoplight
in Pa'ia, this beach gets windy in the afternoon and offers marginal, shallow swimming.
Tavares can get popular on the weekends, but the crowds during the weekdays are usually
thin. The only facilities are a couple of port-a-potties in the dirt parking lot. On occasion
the parking lot can turn into a raucous local tailgate party.
Ho'okipa Beach Park
The global epicenter of the windsurfing world, Ho'okipa also offers a thin, sandy beach
better for tanning than any form of swimming. A fringing reef creates a small pond which
is nice for small children. A wide range of international visitors can usually be found
sunning here. Mornings are usually calm at Ho'okipa. When the surf isn't too high, loc-
al spearfishers dive for tako (octopus) and you'll see numerous sea turtles coming up to
breathe. There are two lifeguard towers as well as showers. A heavy local crowd usually
