Mile Marker 40.8: Turnoff for Palapala Ho'omau Church
Palapala Ho'omau Church
This unassuming, blissfully tropical church founded in 1864 is the final resting place of
historic aviator Charles Lindbergh. If you reach the fruit stand at Laulima Farm, you've
gone too far. Once on the correct road, follow the signs which point out the church and
park in the shade of an enveloping banyan. The doors of this church are often locked, but
the main draws are the rural beauty and the historic gravesite. A small trail from the back
of the cemetery leads to Kipahulu Point Park which offers a basic picnic table overlook-
ing the coast.
Mile Marker 40.6: Laulima Farm fruit stand and kitchen
Laulima Farm
Just 0.2 mile past the turnoff for the church is eccentric and welcoming Laulima Farm
(9am-5pm Tues.-Sun.), a sprawling compound growing a wealth of organic produce. The
small roadside kitchen is for a healthy afternoon snack. At one time, you could blend your
own smoothie here by riding a bicycle-powered blender, but recent objections from the
Health Department have discontinued that practice. Thankfully, the farm still retains its
funky charm.
Mile Marker 39.2: Lelekea Bay
Mile Marker 39: Road begins to deteriorate and becomes narrow with precipitous drop-

the island. As a point of reference, from this point it's 50 miles to Kahului Airport going
around the back side, and it will take about two hours without stopping. If you choose to
return the way you came, it's 60 miles, and it will take about 2.5 hours without stopping.
While bumpier, the back road is much straighter and has less traffic.
Mile Marker 38.8: Alelele Falls
Alelele Falls
You've seen a lot of waterfalls on your journey, but 60-foot Alelele Falls truly are a beauty.
Reaching the falls requires a short 10-minute hike. Although parking for the trailhead is
on the Kaupo side of the bridge at mile marker 38.8, the trailhead itself is back on the
Kipahulu side at the spot where the bridge begins. Following this well-defined trail, you'll
