Mile Marker 48: Waioka Pond
MM Waioka Pond
Hidden at mile marker 48, Waioka Pond is a local favorite which remains controversial.
Waioka Pond (often referred to as Venus Pool) is a “locals only” spot that will need to be
respected to remain open. You need to cross through a private pasture to get to the ocean-
front pool. Because it's such a popular spot among locals, the landowners don't want to
completely restrict access—yet. An injury, a lawsuit, or other negative impacts on the en-
vironment could result in the pond being closed to visitors and locals alike. So be careful,
be respectful, and tread lightly.
For responsible visitors, this is one of the most scenic spots on the island. The first
challenge is finding a legal parking spot. Because the mauka (mountain side) of the road is
lined with residential homes, the only parking is along a fence on the makai (ocean side)
of the road. In order to park legally—facing the correct direction—you need to cross over
the bridge past the 48 mile marker sign, pull off the side of the road, flip a U-turn, and
then start traveling back toward Hana town. Now that you're facing the correct direction,
you can find a parking spot along the grass bordering the thin metal fence. Once you've
parked, follow the fence line toward the bridge where you'll notice the signs and a small
but deliberate opening in the fence. Pass through this opening and then follow the thin dirt
trail running through the pasture down toward the shoreline. Make a right down through
the trees at the concrete structure and you'll emerge at a cliff face peering out over a large
pool. This first overlook is a popular cliff diving spot among locals. To reach the pool
without jumping, clamber down the rocks off to your right. The pool is fed by both fresh
stream water as well as saltwater washing in from the ocean. There's a small island in the
middle of the pool; swim over for a view of the rocky shoreline.
