In-Depth Information
Holy Rosary Church
Immigrant Filipino workers constructed Holy Rosary Church (954 Baldwin Ave., 808/
579-9551, services 7am Mon.-Fri., 7:30am Sun.) in Upper Pa'ia in 1915, during the hey-
day of Pa'ia's sugar operations. The church dutifully served Pa'ia's Catholic community
throughout its tenure as an industrial sugar town. As the sugar industry waned and the
workers aged, however, the congregation thinned out. As the historic church approaches
its 100th anniversary, visitors are encouraged to leave a donation to aid in much needed
renovations.
Makawao Union Church
On the upper reaches of the ambiguous border between Pa'ia and Makawao stands
Makawao Union Church (1445 Baldwin Ave., 808/579-9261, service 10:30am Sun.), a
stone, Gothic-style church placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The
church was originally established within a wooden building in 1861; the stone reconstruc-
tion was overseen by renowned architect Charles William Dickey, the same man respons-
ible for designing the expansive Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center a few miles up the road.
The colorful stained glass windows were retained from the original church.
