A worthwhile stopover on the Road to Hana is trendy, funky, and undeniably sexy Pa'ia
(Pa-EE-ah). Nominated by Coastal Living magazine as one of the “happiest seaside towns
in America,” it's unlike anywhere else on the island. It only takes 10 minutes in town to
realize that the residents of Pa'ia are stoked on life. Laid-back and worry-free, Pa'ia is a
town that skanks along to the beat of its own bongo. When Jerry Garcia died, thousands of
descended upon the town when it was determined that his soul had gone to Pa'ia. If you
feel that a public sidewalk isn't the proper venue for dreadlocked, barefoot hippies weav-
ing hemp bracelets, this town may not be for you.
East Maui is a pocket of serenity in a rapidly paced world, a breath of fresh air, a weight
off your shoulders. Throw in some freshly baked banana bread, fresh-picked fruit from
a roadside stand, tent poles or a quaint bed-and-breakfast, and you have a true getaway.
Stroll barefoot down the center of the highway and forget the rest of the world even exists.
Driving the Road to Hana

cursion to Hana didn't know what they were getting themselves into. Three little words
will make or break your trip:
