GAS
Makawao
The only gas station in Makawao is the Ohana Fuels (1100 Makawao Ave., 808/573-9295,
24 hours) station across the street from Stopwatch Bar and Grill. There is also a small Min-
it Stop convenience store that sells standard gas station fare as well as basic auto supplies
if you're in need of a quick auto fix.
Pukalani
Pukalani has two gas stations, Shell (3425 Old Haleakala Hwy., 808/572-3977, 24 hours)
and Ohana Fuels (3310 Old Haleakala Hwy., 808/572-6350, 24 hours) a quarter-mile
from each other along Old Haleakala Highway. While the Shell station only has a tiny
walk-in concession booth, the Ohana Fuels station has a Minit Stop convenience store
where you can pick up some late-night munchies or an early morning coffee if fueling up
for sunrise at Haleakala.
Kula
Both the gas stations in Kula are classically “old school,” and you're just as likely to see
someone grabbing diesel for farm equipment as you are to see someone putting “the ex-
pensive gas” into their foreign-made luxury car. At True Value Hardware (3100 Lower
Kula Rd., 808/878-2551, 7am-6pm weekdays, 8am-5pm weekends) you can fill up and
also shop for some basic auto supplies. The price of gas here is usually some of the
cheapest on the island.
For a true Kula experience, however, why not top off with a few gallons at the
historic Calasa Service Station (4836 Lower Kula Rd., 808/878-6461, 8am-5pm week-
days, 8am-3pm Sat.), which looks like something out of the 1930s. Attendants still pump
the gas for you. To find Calasa just keep driving straight up Lower Kula Road past Holy
Ghost Church and Kula Bistro.
Keokea and Ulupalakua
The only gas this far out is at the Chevron station at Ching Store (9212 Kula Hwy., 808/
878-1556, 7am-5pm daily), although since there are no credit card readers on the pumps
outside, you need to be there before the 5pm closing time.
