Coffee Shops
There are few things better than Sunday brunch at Grandma's Coffee House.
While most visitors are bathing on the shoreline, those in the know are having weekend
brunch at M Grandma's Coffee House (9232 Kula Hwy., 808/878-2140,
www.grandmascoffee.com , 7am-5pm daily, $13). Most locals won't drive over an hour to
get to breakfast, but this is the one exception. The gentle tunes of live slack key guitar
mingle with the aroma of freshly roasted coffee, and both waft over the outdoor patio
and out into the pastureland below. Doing business out of the simple, green, plantation-
style building since 1988, Grandma's coffee's story dates back much further than that.
“Grandma” began brewing her own coffee back in 1918, although only for herself and her
friends, using locally grown beans and her own roaster. Her coffee tradition was passed
down four generations through the family that still operates the restaurant today. The same
strain of locally grown beans are still used in all of their coffee, and the same roast-
er—which is now over 100 years old—sits right there next to the kitchen and is where all
the coffee is still roasted today. In addition to the coffee, Grandma's serves up delicious
