PUKALANI
Local Style
Inside the Pukalani Terrace Center, Mixed Plate (55 Pukalani St., 6am-3:30pm Mon.-Fri.,
6am-2:30pm Sat., 9am-2pm Sun., $6-10) has been pumping out traditional plate lunch op-
tions for years. While it might not look like much from the outside, there's always a good-
size local crowd hanging out in this funky old diner.
Italian
The best—and only—Italian food in tiny Pukalani is at Serpico's Pizzeria (7 Aewa Pl.,
808/572-8498, www.serpicosmaui.com , 11am-10pm daily, $12-25) just off Old Haleakala
Highway. If you are heading uphill, it's on your left in a standard-looking office building
just past the town McDonald's. Despite its humble appearance, however, the food is any-
thing but standard. The owners came to Maui by way of Italy, and the thin-crust, hand-
tossed pizzas reflect the generations of tinkering that have gone into their pies. Beyond
pizza, Serpico's also serves up calzones, lasagna, raviolis, and a range of hoagies at an af-
fordable $7-9. If you want to pair your chicken parmesan dinner with a bottle of Italian
wine, feel free to bring your own, as Serpico's is BYOB.
American
Tucked away in the residential section of Pukalani, you would never happen upon the
Pukalani Clubhouse (360 Pukalani St., 808/572-1325, www.pukalaniclubhouse.com ,
7am-8:30pm daily, $9-14) unless you were playing golf at the country club. The food here
is a combination of local plate lunch and traditional American, with Maui Cattle Company
burgers and deli sandwiches. If you're feeling like you could eat an entire Upcountry cow,
loosen up your belt by taking the “Loco Moco Challenge,” a gluttonous undertaking which
involves ingesting six beef patties, six eggs, six scoops of rice, a pint of gravy, and a cup
of macaroni salad within a gut-busting time of 60 minutes. The reward? Your meal (a $35
value) is free and you get your picture on the wall!
Japanese
About the only thing that Pukalani has in common with cities such as Tokyo, New York,
and Chicago is they are all places where Chef Kojima has artfully mastered his sushi
trade. At the out-of-the-way Kojima's Sushi Bar (81 Makawao Ave., 808/573-2859,
www.kojimassushi.com , noon-3pm Mon.-Fri., 5pm-9pm Mon.-Sat., $7-16), classic sushi
options such as California rolls and rainbow rolls accompany standard plate lunch fare
such as teriyaki chicken and seared ahi wraps. Come for dinner and BYOS (bring your
