ents, and allows patrons to bring in their own beer or wine without charging a corkage fee.
Forgot the bottle of wine? Morihara Store sells some right across the street.
French
To call La Provence (3158 Lower Kula Rd., 808/878-1313, www.laprovencekula.com ,
7am-9pm Wed.-Fri., 8:45am-1:45pm weekends, $1, cash only) a hidden gem might read
like a cliché, but in the case of this boutique French restaurant, it's hidden so well you
could drive by without even noticing it. On Lower Kula Road just past the True Value
hardware store, La Provence offers everything from flaky croissants and café au lait for
breakfast to affordable and filling crepes. Order a mushroom and spinach or vegetable and
goat cheese crepe accompanied by Kula greens and roasted potatoes. It's cash only; there's
an ATM at the True Value.
Food Cart
Inside the gate of the Kula Country Farms (Kula Hwy. past mile marker 13, 808/
878-8381, www.kulacountryfarmsmaui.com , 10am-3pm Tues.-Fri., 8am-3pm Sat.-Sun.) is
a food truck serving $6 fish tacos and $8 Papa Rice Burgers made from beef sourced
straight from Kula's Ka'ono'ulu Ranch. Lunch items can sell out early since the price is a
steal for what you're getting.
Markets
If Kula were to have anything resembling a town center, the argument could be made
for it being Morihara Store (4581 Lower Kula Rd., 808/878-2578, 6:30am-8pm Mon.-
Sat., 7:30am-8pm Sun.), the main general store that services most of Kula's basic culinary
needs. Pick up anything from condiments for a picnic in Rice Park, cheap to-go items for
lunch, or a beer or bottle of wine for the BYOB restaurant across the street. Like many
other general stores across the island, Morihara is a throwback to antiquity where the fast
pace of modern life can be checked at the door.
Coffee Shops
Although the best coffee shop in all of Upcountry is out in Keokea, those in need of a
quick—and early—cuppa joe can find it at the Crater Coffee (15200 Haleakala Hwy.,
808/757-1342, 3am-7am Mon.-Sat.) truck sitting right in front of the Kula Lodge and
opening at a REM-shattering 3am. The main customers here are visitors heading up to
catch the sunrise at Haleakala in the morning, and seeing as it's the only place open this
early that serves coffee and bagels, this is going to be a life-saver if you find yourself strug-
gling through the early sunrise wakeup.
