The Kula Lodge (15200 Haleakala Hwy., 808/878-1535, www.kulalodge.com , 7am-9pm
daily, breakfast until 10:45am, $12-34) has been welcoming hungry patrons into its rustic
interior for so long it's become synonymous with Kula dining. Set inside a private home
constructed in the 1940s, this panoramic, mountainside perch maintains a pace of life that
hasn't changed much. At 3,200 feet in elevation, it's little bit cooler up here, and the
Lodge's dark-wood interior seems a perfect fit with the low temperatures and low-hanging
clouds. The entranceway is adorned with Curtis Wilson Cost paintings (his gallery is loc-
ated beneath the restaurant), and the warm, welcoming atmosphere is the biggest draw for
dining at the Lodge. The service can be hit-or-miss, but you'll be so full from a huge break-
fast of paniolo steak and eggs or a dinner of kiawe-roasted prime rib to care about anything

Kula Sandalwoods Café (15427 Haleakala Hwy., 808/878-3523,
www.kulasandalwoods.com , 7am-3pm daily, $9-11) is a laid-back venue where the owners
will chat you up like an old friend. Breakfast is served until 11am, although if you're a few
minutes late and hankering for an omelet, they'll probably be nice enough to let it slide.
While the outdoor lanai is still a nice place to enjoy your meal, the cozy interior features
a fireplace in the corner and country music on the radio. For breakfast try the Keokea om-
elet; at lunch go for the kalua pig sandwich.
Italian
M Kula Bistro (4556 Lower Kula Rd., 808/871-2960, www.kulabistro.com ,
7:30am-8:30pm daily, $12-20) has infused the Kula culinary scene with new life. Upon
first bite of the pesto chicken flatbread or grilled vegetable panini, it's apparent that head
chef Luciano Zanon has been perfecting this cuisine since his childhood spent in Venice.
The barbecue chicken and Maui onion pizza and creamy vodka pomodoro only further
prove his success. As if you needed more reasons to love the restaurant, Kula Bistro also
puts out desserts which are freshly baked every day, mainly uses locally sourced ingredi-
