In-Depth Information
Stick doughnuts from Komoda's are an Upcountry classic.
Bakery
You haven't officially visited Upcountry until you've stood on the corner of Makawao's
only intersection and treated yourself to the doughy perfection served at M Komoda
Store and Bakery (3674 Baldwin Ave., 808/572-7261, 7am-5pm Mon.-Tues. and Thurs.-
Fri., Sat. 7am-2pm). Komoda's defines Upcountry. The unmistakable aroma of its “stick”
doughnuts and cream puffs wafts on the predawn air each morning. Residents of Makawao
have been getting their early morning pastry fix at Komoda for generations. It's where
grandparents can still take their grandkids to get the same handmade pastry at the same
store that they would go to when they were kids. Lines still form outside before the 7am
opening, and popular items such as the baked butter rolls will often sell out within hours.
The store continues to operate without computers, so expect to pay with cash.
