this Upcountry roadhouse. In Hali'imaile village along Hali'imaile Road between Baldwin
Avenue and the Haleakala Highway, the restaurant is housed in what was this pineapple
town's general store. Master chef Beverly Gannon presents creative “Hawaiian regional
cuisine with an American and international twist,” and while the menu changes season-
ally, a sampling of what you might expect includes appetizers such as the brie and grape
quesadilla, sashimi Napoleon, and Bev's crab pizza. Entrées include
paniolo
barbecue ribs,
coconut seafood curry, rib eye steak, rack of lamb Hunan-style, or pan-seared scallops. The
food is always healthy and fresh, and the portions plentiful. Whatever your choice, you'll
leave with a full belly and a smile on your face. The setting is casual, but because of the
elevation, long sleeves and pants might be in order.

The best coffee bar is inside the
Rodeo General Store

caffeinated cheer. It's one of the few places on the island that serves organically roasted
coffee with organic milk. But if that's too “hippie” for you, rest assured that the taste is on
par with, if not better, than the majority of coffee shops on the island.

tially defines mornings in Makawao. The coffee and breakfast offerings are standard fare
(breakfast croissants and omelets are an affordable choice). The true color of this place in
the mornings is the cast of eccentric and artsy characters. It's a classic community meeting
place in one of America's best small towns.
