California that the area earned the nickname of “Nu Kaleponi,” Hawaiian for “New
California.”
Back in China, hundreds of thousands of Chinese citizens continued to live under
the system of imperial rule which had lasted for two thousand years. When the Qing
Dynasty finally fell in 1911, the roots of the revolution wouldn't be traced to major
cities such as Beijing or Shanghai, but instead, to the rural slopes of sleepy Keokea.
Today the remnants of this lengthy Chinese history are evident in the town's
two mom-and-pop stores-Fong's Store and Ching Store-and the cashiers at either
will be more than happy to talk about the unique heritage of Keokea. In addition to
the general stores, sites such as the Kwock Hing Society building and St. Joseph's
Church were constructed by members of the Chinese community.

Holding down the other corner of Makawao's only intersection since 1986, Casanova
(1188 Makawao Ave., 808/572-0220, www.casanovamaui.com , 7:30am-9:30pm Sun.-
Tues., 7:30am-2am Wed.-Sat., $18-34) restaurant is a three-part establishment where you
can either grab a quick deli sandwich for lunch, have a fine meal of pizza and pasta for
dinner, or dance to the wee hours of the morning at Upcountry's only nightclub. While the

oven, and Casanova has all the makings of a romantic date night you might find in a big
city in a town that doesn't even have stoplights.
If you're looking for Italian that's a lot more casual, Pizza Fresh (1043 Makawao Ave.,
808/572-2000, 4pm-9pm daily, $13-29) is just a half mile down the road. Specialty pizzas
such as pesto chicken or eggplant gouda are available either whole or by the slice and can
be accompanied by fresh salads. There's limited seating, but ordering pizza to go is always
an option.
