In-Depth Information
Adding to an array of already existing shops in Pa'ia, Lahaina, and Ka'anapali, Maui
Hands (1169 Makawao Ave., 808/572-2008, www.mauihands.com , 10am-6pm Mon.-Sat.,

cious gallery of consignment craft work.
KULA
Art Galleries
It isn't possible to talk about Upcountry art without mentioning the Curtis Wilson Cost
Gallery (15200 Haleakala Hwy., 808/874-6544, www.costgallery.com , 8:30am-5pm
daily). Tucked neatly beneath the Kula Lodge Restaurant, the gallery has the feeling of a
fine wine cellar, though the wine is swapped for exceptionally fine art. It's fair to say that
nobody paints rural Maui better. Cost's love for the island is apparent in his innate abil-
ity to capture its fleeting magic. A recent addition to the collection are pieces by Cost's
daughter Julia Cost. This gallery is a must stop for anyone with an appreciation for fine
art.
If you thought the only place you could find locally made blown glass was in Makawao,
then you haven't stumbled upon Worcester Glassworks (4626 Lower Kula Rd., 808/
878-4000, www.worcesterglassworks.com , 10am-5pm Mon.-Sat., by appointment Sun.),
a studio you would never know was there unless you accidentally ran into the kiln. Just
twenty yards up the road from Kula Bistro and Morihara Store, the clean and well-lit gal-
lery only occupies a small corner of the rustic studio, with the remaining space taken up by
numerous heavy-industrial machines instrumental in the glassblowing process. This gal-
lery is worth a wander in conjunction with a meal at Kula Bistro.
Gifts and Flowers
Right next to the Kula Lodge is the Proteas of Hawaii Gift Shop (15200 Healakala Hwy.,
808/878-2533, www.proteasofhawaii.com , 8am-4pm daily) where you can pick up a bou-
quet of freshly cut protea ($75-140) grown only a half mile away. In addition to the flowers
this small store also sells a number of other locally made crafts, artwork, and gifts.
Down the driveway and between the Kula Lodge and the Proteas of Hawaii Gift
Shop, tucked just out of sight, is the larger Kula Marketplace (808/878-2135,
www.kulamarketplace.com , 8am-7pm daily) where you could easily spend a half an hour
browsing all the various local offerings. Everything from locally made jam to clothing to
Hawaiian music to photography and bamboo cutting boards is on display in this store. It's
