MAKAWAO
MM Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center
About one mile downhill from Makawao is the Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center (2841
Baldwin Ave., 808/572-6560, www.huinoeau.com , 10am-4pm Mon.-Sat., $2 donation
suggested), located on the Baldwin family's 10-acre estate. Matriarch Ethel Baldwin is de-
scribed as “a child of privilege who used every gift she possessed for the creation of a
more beautiful, more intelligent, and more just world.” Given her commitment to educa-
tion and the arts, it came as no surprise that in 1934 the resplendent neo-Spanish mansion
was transformed into a sprawling arts center. Today, artisans here produce everything from
ceramics to lau hala weaving and drawings to sculptures. The old house is home to the
center office, gift gallery, periodic shows, and an informative historical museum about the
estate, while the former stable and carriage house have been changed into working studios.
Classes are available for both visitors and locals. A full class schedule of everything from
ceramics to felting can be found on the website.
