In-Depth Information
at 4,000 feet, you can't have been scuba diving the day before. The weight limit for this
course is 80-260 pounds. Still, this is a good option if you're on a budget or it's your first
time ziplining.
Golf and Tennis
GOLF
The lone golf course Upcountry is at the Pukalani Country Club (360 Pukalani St., 808/
572-1214, www.pukalanigolf.com , 6:30am-6pm daily), an 18-hole, 6,962-yard course that
weaves through the residential district of Pukalani. At 1,100 feet in elevation this course
looks out over island's central valley. Hole #3 has a unique arrangement where you can
play to one of two different greens—the only such hole in the state. Greens fees for vis-
itors are $88 for tee times before noon, but golfers on a budget will love the $28, “super-
twilight” tee times which are available to anyone teeing off after 2:30pm. There's a driv-
ing range and putting green where you can warm up before your round ($4/bucket for the
range). Cart and club rentals are also available.
TENNIS
The only tennis courts are of the public variety. The best are the Kula Tennis Courts at
the Kula Community Center. There are four courts here which stay lit until 8:30pm, it's
rarely windy, and the view from 3,000 feet offers evening sunsets past the silhouette of
Holy Ghost Church. To reach the Kula tennis courts, drive toward the parking lot for Holy
Ghost Church (4300 Lower Kula Hwy), where you'll notice the community center on the
opposite side of the road. If you reach Morihara Store you've gone too far.
In Makawao there are two public tennis courts at the Eddie Tam sporting complex, al-
though they have some cracks forming in them and are more prone to wet weather than the
courts in Kula. The courts are along Makawao Avenue half a mile before the intersection
at the center of town, and rarely is there anyone waiting to play.
In Pukalani there is one public tennis court at the Hannibal Tavares Community
Center (91 Pukalani St.) across the street from the Pukalani Terrace Center. This lone
court is tucked away in back of the swimming pool and was built facing the wrong direc-
tion,, rur so you find yourself staring due west into the sunset during the later hours of the
day.
