spiced salmon, along with creative sides like wasabi mashed potatoes and mango pepper-

MAKENA AND BEYOND
When it comes to finding food this far south, there are three options: Grab lunch at one of
the food trucks on the side of the road, eat at one of the Makena Beach and Golf Resort
restaurants, or turn back around and head to Kihei or Wailea.
American
The most casual and popular spot in Makena is Café on the Green (5415 Makena
Alanui, 808/875-5888, www.makenaresortmaui.com , 11am-6:30pm daily, $12-16). The
happy hour here is one of the best in South Maui and the late-afternoon view from the
outdoor patio is the best in Makena. The restaurant is by the golf clubhouse, a 10-minute
walk from the main hotel. The selection of ahi sandwiches and signature cheeseburgers are
affordable and tasty enough to warrant the short jaunt.
Hawaiian Regional
Using herbs and vegetables grown on-site, chef Mark McDowell at Molokini Bar and
Grille (5400 Makena Alanui, 808/875-5888, www.makenaresortmaui.com , 5:30pm-10pm
daily, $23-38) commands a menu punctuated by Hawaiian classics like macadamia nut-
crusted mahimahi and pepper-seared ahi. Everything from the bread to the sauces is made
in-house. The value is exceptional when compared to Wailea, for portions just as fresh and
filling.
Food Cart
Usually parked a half mile from the entrance of Big Beach, Big Beach BBQ
(10:30am-3pm, $10) offers kalua pig tacos, kalua pork sliders, and pineapple sausages.
They're a little overpriced, but you're paying for the convenience of hot and tasty barbecue
this far south of town.
