might expect, this is a heavily local crowd that doesn't see too many tourists, which can
always be part of the fun.
WAILEA
Shows
While there surprisingly aren't that many dinner shows on Maui, if you're looking for
one that will completely wow you, there's no better option than the Willie K Dinner
Show held at Mulligan's On The Blue (100 Kaukahi St., 808/874-1131,
www.mulligansontheblue.com , open until 1am). Even if you've never heard of Uncle Wil-
lie K, once you see him play live you'll never forget him. An insanely talented local
Hawaiian musician who grew up on Maui, Willie K's prowess stretches across a wide
range of genres from blues to Hawaiian to rock and roll and opera. Yes, opera. This is
your chance to hear a Hawaiian man sing opera inside an Irish pub. Tickets are $30/per-
son, or if you want to combine it with the dinner buffet option (and thereby get a better
seat), the price rises to $65/person. The show goes on several times throughout the month,
but since the schedule is highly variable, the best thing to do is to check the website at
www.mulligansontheblue.com .
If you're on a budget and looking for a free public show, head to Wailea on Wednes-
days (6:30pm-8pm), held at the Shops at Wailea (3750 Wailea Alanui Dr.). Local Hawaii-
an artists perform live music in the lower courtyard section, and all of the surrounding art
galleries and restaurants get in on the action with varying specials and festivities of their
own.
All of the resorts feature a rotating schedule of live performances within the hotel
grounds, so if you just take a wander through the area around sunset, you're sure to find
a couple of slack key guitar players picking sweet melodies as the sun goes down or live
hula performances taking place around the hotel lobbies.
Lu'au
The best lu'au on the island is Old Lahaina Luau in Lahaina, but if you're staying on the
south end of the island and don't want to drive that far, there are two lu'au options in South
Maui from which you can choose. The official check-in time may be quite early, but don't
feel like you have to show up exactly on time. The first 1.5-2 hours of most lu'aus involves
waiting in line to find out where you'll be sitting, checking out the vendors, taking photos
with the dancers, and participating in “pre-game” festivities such as traditional Hawaiian
